THE OSBORN FAMILY TRANS-PACIFIC RECORDING PILOT PROJECT

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

Weekly Update #6, in which we have learned the basics of recording, we have done some trials, and everyone is now ready to provide final takes.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the band.

Husband Tony is Patriarch, lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and guitarist.

When he isn’t playing music, Tony is an Associate Clinical Professor for Northern Arizona University, teaching Special Education. He usually teaches at extended campuses in Tucson, Coolidge, and Thatcher but during the pandemic he’s had to convert everything to online. He’s teaching entirely online and entirely at home.

Daughter Rosie is lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and bassist.

When she isn’t singing, Rosie is an Assistant Professor of English at Joongbu University in Daejeon, South Korea. South Korea remains under lockdown due to the pandemic, and Rosie has converted her classes to online, uploading videos for her students to watch and respond to according to their own schedules. Rosie is also a ceramicist and they have converted their mother-in-law apartment into a ceramic studio. She has plans for privately teaching English and Ceramics in their studio, but for now, that will have to wait.

Son-in-law James is lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and banjoist.

When he isn’t banjo-picking, James is an Assistant Professor of English at Hongik University in Sejong, South Korea. Due to the lockdown, he has also converted his classes to online, live-streaming all of his lectures.

Rosie says, “We are both very fortunate to be able to work from home. Since we are staying home as much as possible, we are gardening a lot more than usual, and I am working in the studio a bit. Mostly I am missing seeing my students face to face and spending time with friends. We are both very grateful for the digital age, so we can maintain contact with family, friends, and students.”

Daughter Sonja is lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and guitarist.

When she isn’t singing, Sonja is a content developer and assistant instructor for TESOL certificate programs online. She says, “COVID has mostly just made me really nervous, and slowly gotten my car to a pitiable state as the mechanics are all forced to stay closed, and I can’t drive it except when really necessary. This has meant I’ve been home, doing more cooking and cleaning and walking in the woods.”

Son-in-law Eboy is lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and guitarist.

When he isn’t singing, Eboy is Assistant Public Health Inspector for the Lundu Public Health Office. Eboy says, “I work as frontline medical for this Covid 19. I feel good, learn a lot of stuff and motivated during this moment. I really miss to take car ride with my lovely beautiful gorgeous wife. I miss juggling takraw, ride to beach, go to city together with my lavi. I hope this Covid 19 will end as soon as possible so that everything will be peace and enjoying the life. You Stay at Home for Us..We Stay at Work for You.”

Son Russell is lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and percussionist.

When he isn’t banging on drums, he is a student at the University of Arizona, studying Psychology. He studies online, so the pandemic has not affected him much, except that his father and I spend a lot more time at home, which I’d like to think is a good thing, except that we can be terribly distracting when he’s doing his schoolwork. Luckily for him, everyone in the household has schoolwork to do, so we all go off into our own private corners. Russell is a talented and creative chef, and most evenings we enjoy his wonderful culinary creations for dinner.

And me. I’m the Mama. And I’m lead vocalist, backup vocalist, and keyboardist.

I’m a student at the University of Arizona studying Piano Performance. All my classes have been converted to online also, and it’s fascinating to see how my various professors are accomplishing this task. I put it in the present tense, because it’s a work in progress. After all, they only got two days to make the conversion. So details are still being worked out. I was supposed to have my Senior Recital this semester, but everything is shut down.

COMING UP: We finalize our tracks and begin to put it together. Stay tuned!
